CitiPower & Powercor’s Biggest Project Yet: Underground Cable Installation in Melbourne

Citipower and Powercor supply power to over 1.1 million homes in Victoria. They own and operate Australia’s largest electricity networks.

Daly’s construction was instrumental in completing one of the most complex underground cable installation projects in Melbourne CBD. The trio has worked on upgrading the city’s network as a part of a major $250 million project involving the Waratah Place Zone Substation.

Under extreme events like fires, traffic accidents, thunderstorms or infrastructure failure, power is essential and also the first thing that might fail. Extreme weather conditions like fires, storms, traffic incidents or infrastructure failures can put networks under pressure and affect the electrical supply to the local residents.

This project ensures the network has double backup to provide a 24/7 power supply to homes and businesses and withstand power outages. Waratah Place Zone Substation (WP ZSS) is at the centrepiece of this project. It allows power to be redirected so there aren't major power outages and are limited to no more than 30 minutes.

Daly's construction was engaged by Powercor Network Services and CitiPower to design and construct 10 new 66kV underground cable circuits for the new WP ZSS. These new circuits are connected to other substations in CBD and nearby areas.

This project would be a welcome change for Melburnians and will ensure there's a minimum power outage, especially during extreme weather conditions. You are on the safe side from your electrical retailers. However, to prevent power outages, especially during peak summer conditions, you may want to take additional steps like:

  • Reduce your energy consumption by turning off appliances and lights that are not in use.
  • Get your electrical appliances, circuits and wirings tested regularly by a trusted electrician. Your electrician will ensure everything is working as expected and faults are discovered before they become massive problems.
  • Test your safety switch every 3 months. If the safety switch is faulty, call a master electrician immediately to ensure your family is protected.
  • While you are using your aircon, ensure the doors and windows are closed in rooms that are not being used
  • Use your blinds and curtains to keep out the harsh sunlight and ensure your home remains cool
